A tragic accident occurred Friday morning in Hedrick when Mr. George W. Ritter was struck by a southbound Milwaukee passenger train. The accident occurred at 10:45 AM and Mr. Ritter passed away at the St. Joseph hospital in Ottumwa four hours later.

Mr. Ritter was burning grass along the railroad right-of-way which borders his lot. Unofficial reports have it that as the train approached he stepped off the track but that when only a few feet from him, he stepped back into the path of the train. He was hurled off the track by the impact. The train stopped in the crew went to his aid. He was rushed to the hospital. Mr. Ritter was partially deaf and his interest in the fire no doubt made him unaware of the approaching train.

He suffered a crushed right leg just above the ankle, a fractured left arm and a severe head injury. He never regained consciousness. The Ritter home is located on north Main Street and the accident occurred on the track between the Ritter home in Lutheran church.

He and his wife had planned to leave later in the day to spend the winter with their children at Aurora, Illinois

Mr. Ritter was born north of Hedrick December 12, 1873, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Ritter. He was married at Hedrick to Daisy Monnette, who survives. He was a retired salesman and had lived most of his life in this community. He was a member of the Baptist church.

Son Of Andrew & Louisa W.( staedter ) Ritter.
Husbund Of Daisy Emma ( Mannette ) Ritter
