A BIOGRAPHY OF ELIZABETH "BETSY" CALHOUN MATHEWS (1786-1833), by Laurence Overmire, genealogist and family historian (4th great grandson), updated June 2018:
Elizabeth "Betsy" Calhoun was born in Pennsylvania, probably East Pennsborough Township in Cumberland County, one of thirteen children of Revolutionary War veteran Samuel Calhoun and his wife Agnes Thomson. As a descendant of Scotland's prominent Colquhoun (Calhoun) clan, Elizabeth has quite an illustrious heritage. Her ancestral lines, if accurate, trace back to King James IV "Ironbelt" and Robert the Bruce.
Elizabeth's exact birthdate is impossible to determine as it has been recorded as several different dates by several different sources. According to a family Bible, she was born Apr. 5, 1786.
Elizabeth married Jesse Mathews on Feb. 25, 1808, in Liberty Township, Trumbull County, Ohio, with Nehemiah Scott as the Justice of the Peace. It is believed they had about nine children including five that have been positively identified: twins Jefferson and Emma Jane, Chester C., Matilda, and Jesse H.
Jesse and Elizabeth and their family moved to Jackson Township, Ohio, in March of 1818. The 1820 census shows that they were neighbors of Martin and Catharine (Blosser) Fast. Their great granddaughter Mary Frances Mitchelson would later marry into the Fast family.
Elizabeth died rather young in 1833 at the age of about 47. She is buried in Orange Cemetery (Nankin Cemetery), Ashland County, Ohio, with her husband. Her gravestone, which is difficult to read and probably has caused much of the confusion, appears to show she died May 26, 1833, but others say she died May 6, 1833. The weathered inscription also appears to show Aged 45y (or 47) 11m (or 1 Mos) 22d. If her death occurred on May 26, 1833 and she was aged 47y 1m and 22d, then she would have been born April 4, 1786, only 1 day off from what was recorded in the family Bible.
