Wife of Dr. John W. Parmley.

Mary Eleanor Ellis was born on April 20, 1845, died March 8, 1934, aged 88 years, 10 months and 16 days.

She was the daughter of John and Hettie Ellis, of one of the oldest families in this county, her father having migrated to this state from North Carolina, and settled at what is known as the Ellis Gap, more than 100 years ago. Part of the old house is still standing. He established the Rock post office, which he named from a bluff, which was near by. He was a prosperous farmer in those days, and raised a large family, of which Mary E. was next to the youngest.

She was married to John W. Parmley, Nov. 15, 1866, and to this union 9 children were born, five of whom, with her companion, have preceded her in death. Those that are left to mourn her passing are one half brother, Richard Ellis, of Golconda, her son, George, and three daughters, Mrs. Milo Austin, of Rock, Mrs. John Maynor, of Eddyville, and Mrs. Indya P. Wade, of Golconda, also seven grandchildren, Ralph P. Wade and Mrs. T. C. Baker, of Chicago; Mrs. Eugene Brown of Lexington, Ky., Mrs. Harry G. Maynor, Miss Virginia Wade, Guy E. Abbott, of Golconda, John Parmley, of Rock, and one great-grandchild, Harry D. Maynor besides a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

She was converted and joined the Primitive Baptist church of Old Grandpier, about 40 years ago, and since that day her life has been a living example of Christian faith and fortitude. She was never heard to complain of sufferings, which was intense, but said, “It is all right.” She lost her oldest son by drowning while she was in middle life, which was such a shock that she never regained her normal health, but she was a mother in all the word embraces, self-sacrificing, patient and long-suffering.

Being the wife of a country doctor, she had many hardships, but bore it all, and her children rise up and call her blessed. She will be greatly missed by them, all the more by having her love and counsel so many years.

She was laid to rest by the side of her husband, who preceded her almost nine years ago, Friday, March 9th, in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Her funeral was conducted by Eld. N. A. Rogers.
