Oregon's last living Civil War veteran. He served 90 days in the summer of 1864 in an independent forty-man cavalry unit that patrolled Oregon. The unit was officially Olney's Detachment of Oregon Cavalry but they were poorly trained, undisciplined and not respected by the regulars with whom they served. The regulars called them "Olney's Forty Thieves."
In 2010 the headstone was cleaned and a small plaque attached indicating Smith was the last Civil War veteran who lived in Oregon. The grave was then rededicated in a ceremony by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
