She had been a long-time resident of Colorado Springs, having come here in 1952. Mrs. Thompson was born November 7, 1915, on the family farm, 7 miles northwest of Waynoka, OK, to George W. and Mattie E. (Ferguson) Bixler. She graduated from Waynoka High School and attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, OK.
After graduating from Enid (OK) Business College, she worked at H.A. Marr Grocery Company where she met her future husband, John R.Thompson. They were married in Enid November 11, 1939. After the births of their two children, they moved to Colorado Springs where they started Empire Supermarket in Golf Acres Shopping Center in 1952.
Later a second store was built on W. Colorado Avenue. Following her husband's death in 1962, she continued to own and manage both supermarkets until their sale in 1970.
Mrs.Thompson was a member of Altrusa International, The Assistance League of Colorado Springs, P.E.O., Colorado Springs Country Club and First United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter Pam Michener (Mike) of Boulder, son John Thompson (Joanne) of Freestone, CA, and her two grandsons, Adam Michener of Denver and Ben Thompson of Hermosa Beach, CA.
A memorial service will take place Monday,August 11, at 2:30 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Avenue.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Colorado P.E.O. Chapter House, 1819 W. Cheyenne Road, Colorado Springs 80906.
