John Cartwright was probably born about the year 1755 in Amherst County, Virginia. He resided there and at Austintown and Lordstown, Ohio. He died and was buried at Lordstown.

He married Polly McMullin, a widow. She had two sons by her first marriage, viz; Archibald and Gilead. There were three children by her second husband, John Cartwright, viz: John, James and Joan.

After his wife's death he made his home with his son, James. Because of his great fondness for hunting he was called "Nimrod".

Another family tree states John Cartwright was born 06 Feb 1762, Princess Ann, Amherst, VA.

He married Margaret Luckens (Lukens) "Polly" who was buried in Austintown, Mahoning County, Ohio at Four Mile Run Cemetery.

John died in Lordstown, Trumbull, Ohio and is buried there.

His father was Robert Cartwright born 1725, St. Mary's Co, Maryland who married Margaret. Robert died 1799.
