At age 21 commissioned December 1, 1861, as 1st Lieutenant in Co. K, 95th New York Infantry. Promoted to captain September 1, 1862; mustered out March 12, 1863.

Age 23 years Enrolled April 11, 1863 mustered in April 11, 1863 as 2nd Lieutenant with Company B. 5th New York Heavy Artillery to serve 3 years as 1st Lieutenant June 6, 1863 March 6, 1865 commissioned Captain mustered out July 19, 1865 at Harper's Ferry Virginia.

Not commissioned 2nd Lieutenant Commissioned May 18, 1863 as 1st Lieutenant with rank from April 11, 1863, rank of Captain February 27, 1865 with rank from December 16, 1864.

He then married Louise McLaughlin in July of 1871. Their children were:
