Semmes Dies at 71
Oliver J. Semmes, Jr., recognized as a man who helped build the city of Gulf Breeze after serving as city manager of Pensacola, died Friday at the age of 71.

A civil engineer who dedicated 44 years of his life to serving the public, Semmes died at his home at 3090 Blackshear Ave.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Father Raymond Mullins will say mass. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Pensacola.

The body will be at the Fisher-Pou Chapel for viewing Sunday, starting at 10 a.m. The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday in the chapel.

Born in Pensacola in 1903, Semmes was graduated from Pensacola High School in 1920 and attended Alabama Polytechnical Institute at Auburn, Ala., graduating in 1924 with a __________ civil engineering.

He was appointed city manager in June, 1947. He served in that capacity until 1961 and in 1963 accepted the job of Gulf Breeze city engineer.

Six years ago, the city of Gulf Breeze recognized Semmes for his public service. An office in the city hall was named in his honor.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Kate Greenwood Semmes of Pensacola; two daughters, Mrs. Roger Carlquist of Rockville, Md., and Mrs. Max Sherrill of Clemson, S. C.; two sons, Oliver J. Semmes III of Alexandria, Va., and Richard G. Semmes of Pensacola; two sisters, Mrs. Charles W. Crawford of Pensacola and Mrs. William B. Whaley of LoJolla, Calif., and 16 grandchildren.

The family has requested that flowers not be sent. Memorial should be made to a favorite charity.

Mr. Oliver J. Semmes, Jr., 71, of 3090 Blackshear Ave., died Friday.

He was a native of Pensacola and graduated from Pensacola High School in 1920. He attended Alabama Polytechnical Institute at Auburn, Ala., graduating in 1924 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering.
