Hazel Bernice Mathis, 75, a resident of Appleton, died Saturday, August 2, 2008, at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Russellville.
She was born December 23, 1932, at Old Hickory in Conway County, Arkansas. She was the valedictorian of her graduating class at Wonderview High School. She was a member of the Appleton Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she was a deacon and member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Women's club. She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, and gospel music. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Randall Mathis; a sister, Pearl Pettit; and two brothers, Earl and Sherman Bennett.
Survivors include a son, William R. Mathis Jr. of Pottsville; two daughters, Pamela Magness and Trish Bice, both of Russellville; a sister Jennie Ann Jones of Hattieville; seven granchildren, Jill Terry, Specialist Jay Jackson stationed in Iraq, Adam Rudder, Kevin Cochran, Stacy Cochran Tunno, Brianna Mathis, and Haley Mathis; and seven great grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at the Appleton Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Richard Falbo officiating. Burial will be in the Appleton Cemetery under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service.
Active pallbearers will be Allen Jones, Will Baker, Leland "Tutor" Franklin, Jeffrey Jones, Leroy Link, Gary Pettit, and Hugh Pierce. Honary pallbearers will be Duane Lawrence and Greg Baker.
