Waltus Jewell Watkins (son of Waltus and Mary Ann Watkins) passed away in Craig, Colorado in 1925 at the age of 73. His obituary was printed as follows:

"Dr. W.J. Watkins, the first dentist to practice in Northwestern Colorado, died Friday at the Craig hotel after an illness of several years. For the past year he has been virtually bedfast.

Waltus Jewell Watkins was born in Clay County, Mo., March 5, 1852,
the son of a pioneer Missouri family. He received his education at William
Jewell College at Liberty, Mo., and afterwards attended the Kansas City Dental
College.

He came to Colorado in the early days and practived dentistry in many parts of the state. For many years he was the only dentist to serve the Yampa, Snake River and Ashley Valleys.

He built one of the early buildings on Yampa Avenue in Craig and later replaced it with the brick office building nowowned by F.H. Griffith. He also owned, at one time, a ranch on Morapas.
Until his illness Dr. Watkins was one of Northwestern Colorado's most progressive citizens. His ready good nature and keen wit made him hosts of friends in this section.

Dr. Watkins was a member of the Masonic lodge, the Elks and the
Modern Woodsmen. He was buried with Masonic honors in Craig cemetery Monday afternoon.

He is survived by four brothers and two sisters. One brother, John
H. Watkins of Lawson, MO., arrived in Craig Monday morning for the funeral. -The Craig Empire, Craig Colorado.

Dr. Watkins was quite well known in this vicinity being a brother of J.H., J.B., A.J. and Miss Carrie E. Watkins of Lawson, Geo. S. Watkins of Madison Valley, Mont., and Mrs. M.D. Scruggs of Kansas City."
