"Making the westward trek was nothing new for Thomas Umphrey and his wife, Nancy Jane Driskill who crossed the plains in a five-month journey in 1853."
"Nancy and Thomas were married in Highland Co, OH, in 1832. Seven years later, they took a steamboat up the Mississippi to Iowa where they farmed near Burlington. Leaving her large brick home which even boasted a stove besides two fireplaces for a small log cabin at the end of the Oregon Trail was no small step for Nancy, then 45, with five children, the youngest only two."
"But Thomas and Nancy had a big inducement as their daughter, Julia Ann, and husband, Allen Parker, had gone as newlyweds the year before. Their letters urging them to come live near them, the chance to acquire 320 acres of free land, and the prospect of adventure led them to sell their property and all but essential possessions for their new life as Oregon pioneers. They took up Donation Land Claim #3887 near the Parkers in Linn County, moving in later years to Albany where Thomas died at age 78 and Nancy at 81. They are buried in the Albany Masonic. Cem."
