Benjamin Pou Izlar, LDS ID KC28-1DM, was the son of Julia Elizabeth Allison Pou, 9NCX-735 (1811-1884), and William Henry Ysslar (later spelled Izlar), KFRL-ZL1 (1810-1888).

Benjamin and three of his brothers, James Ferdinand, William Valmore, and Lauriston Theodore, enlisted in the Edisto Rifles and served in the Civil War. All four returned home after the war.

He enlisted July 20, 1861, as a Fourth Corporal in Co A, Edisto Rifles, of Orangeburg District. This company was reorganized as Co. C, 25th Regiment, SC Volunteers April 12, 1862. He was promoted to Second Corporal October 1, 1862; promoted later to Sargeant. He was wounded at least three times, once during artillery training and twice in battle. He was captured and imprisoned at Elmira, NY. His photograph appears in the history of his unit in "The Edisto Rifles".

He married first in June 1866 Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Rice, #94225182, third daughter of Narcissa Kesiah Wright, #76252951, and Henry Bingham Rice, #94224178. Lizzie was born in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, January 10, 1840; died March 19, 1867; buried at Denmark Cemetery, Denmark, Bamberg County, South Carolina.

Benjamin and Lizzie had one child:
1. Elizabeth E. Izlar, #154117106, b. 1866, d. 1927;m. Dr. Ernest C. Smith, #154117119, b. 1870, d. 1948

He married second Mary Caroline Larisey, #31685496, daughter of Mrs. Caroline Earle Larisey. Mary was born in 1840; died in 1912; buried at Sunnyside Cemetery, Orangeburg, South Carolina. Her mother Caroline is also buried at Sunnyside Cemetery, Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Benjamin and Mary had six children:
