John R. Brown, Veteran Peace Officer for 42 years, is Dead.
John R. Briown, age 83 years, passed away quietly at his home at 311 Bridge Street, Wednesday morning. He had been in failing health for some yers, but had been up and about town daily until last Sunday when he was taken critically ill and grew worse until his death . His wife, Mrs. Mary Brown died in May, 1934, and after that he took little interest in life and often said that he had no desire to live.
John R. Brown was born in Cameron County, Tenn., on April 25, 1855, and came to Texas in 1874 when a young man of 19 years. He settled in the north part of the county and lived for some years in the Veal Station and Springtown Communities.
On Sept 4, 1879, he was married to Miss Mary Oxford, daughter of a pioneer family of that section. For a time, Mrs. Brown farmed near Springtown but soon entered upon the work of peace officer, which was to be his life work, and which he followed continously for 42 years, a period that extended from pioneer days up through and past the World War. He held the unique distinction of having been a candidate fourteen times and in none of these races was he defeated.
Mr. Brown's work as an officer in the Methodist Church and of the order of Mason which he joined at Springtown as a young man. He was also a past president of the Association of Texas Police Chiefs.
Survivors are one son and tow daughters; Reagan G. Brown, Oklahoma City, Mrs. Annie B. Rugg of Galveston and Miss Dollie Brown of Weatherford. Another son, James Madison Brown, died more than twenty years ago.
The funeral services were held under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge from the White Funeral Home at 10 o'clock Thursday morning. The sermon was preached by Rev. J. M. Bond, pastor of the First Methodist Church. Burial took place in the family lot in City Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers: W. H. Hutcheson, Fred Measures, Felix Nelson, George Gore, W.D. Newberry and Wade Hutcheson.
