Some of the Life History of Susannah Justet Davis (Written by Eurilla Wilson in the presence of Mary Jane Davis Wilson Lucas and her mother Susannah Justet Davis in Jackson, Wyoming South Park abt 1930.)

On the Italian side of the Cottian Alps, rests three little valleys Perouse, Lucerna and San Martino, all leading down from the lofty mountains to the plains of Piedmont, Italy. Here the last of a Protestant people called the Vaudois or People of the Valley, who had come back to live and claim their loved homes again following much persecution because of their religious beliefs.

From this little group of stalwart, devote and sincere people came our dear little grandma Susannah Justet Davis, mother of Mary Jane Davis Wilson Lucas, who is the mother of Joy Sylvester Wilson.

Susannah was born 31 Dec 1850 to Daniel and Jane Rostan Justet in Piedmont, Italy. She was working in a silk factory when the LDS missionaries found her, and in visiting, she and her family in their home, they succeded in converting all in their family. In the year 1868 they set sail for America. Their destination was Utah.

After marrying Amos Davis Jr. 5 Sep 1870 in Salt Lake City, she, a pretty little black eyed young lady, resided with him in Long Valley, Utah. Susannah and Amos' first child was born 10 Sep 1871. They were so happy with this little girl. They named her Mary Jane after Amos' first wife. Two other children were born to this union, Nathan and Loretta.

Later, they moved from Long Valley to Joseph, Utah. While there, her father helped to build a schoolhouse, tithing house and a home for his family. It was while living there, Amos met his death. He was hitching a team of mules to a wagon to take his family to Richfield to attend a Church Conference. One of the mules crushed him against a corner of the barn. He died 8 Dec 1877 when Mary Jane was six years old.

Then Susannah married Amos John Davis, the boy the Davis' had raised. To this union five children were born, four girls and one boy, Naomi, Phoena, Rhoda, Marha and John. They lived in Joseph two years then moved to Castle Valley where they lived in a one roomed house with a dirt floor. While living here, most of the children married.

In 1904 they decided to follow some of their children who had moved up to Jackson, Wyoming. Hitching their horses to two covered wagons, loaded in their few possessions, they were on their way.

John Amos Davis died in Jackson 1 Dec 1923. Susannah lived about eleven years longer. Her daughter, Mary Jane Davis Wilson Lucas, made sure she had a new small house to live in in Jackson. Her daughters, especially her last one, Martha Riniker helped her in her last days. She passed away 20 Sep 1934.
