Edward H. Smeltzer, 87, of 502 E. Howard St, Bellefonte, died at Centre Crest Nursing Home, Bellefonte, Sunday, Jan. 5, 1986, at 12:40 p.m.
For most of his life, he was a farmer in Benner Township and since 1947 in Potter Township, near Centre Hall.
He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Centre Hall. He had been active in the Progress Grange, Centre Hall, and also served as grounds foreman of the Grange Fairgrounds for many years. He had served on the board of Meyer Cemetery Association, Benner Township.
He was born Dec. 15, 1898, in College Township, a son of Clyde and Elmira Corl Smeltzer.
On April 2, 1921, he married the former Edna Neese, who died May 1, 1951. On Aug. 20, 1952, he married the former Bertha Lingle Barger, who died April 10, 1983.
He is survived by a son, Robert of Centre Hall RD1; a daughter, Virginia Bradford of Centre Hall; a stepson, Kenneth Barger of Centre Hall; two stepdaughters: Margta Challenger of Mechanicsburg and Bernice Sweet of Garrettsville, Ohio; a sister, Pearl Krebs of Lewistown; one granddaughter; 11 step-grandchildren; 14 step-great-trandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at St. Luke's Lutheran Church Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Larry R. Bergh Officiating. Burial will be at Meyer Cenetery, Benner Township.
Friends will be received at Jeffries-Heintzelman Funeral Home, Centre Hall, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the Church Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
