Prominent Citizen Died Early This Morning.
Stricken With Neuralgia Monday Afternoon in His Office - Death Sudden and Unexpected Came as Severe Shock to Entire City - Esteemed Pioneer and Conscientious Citizen.
__Joseph S. Anderson died today at 3:10 a.m. of neuralgia of the heart, at his residence, 233 Second avenue west. He was stricken with neuralgia in the wrist late Monday afternoon in his office after returning from Marion, where he had spent the afternoon attending to business matters. Yesterday the stroke went to his shoulder, and although he was very ill, hopes were had for his recovery.
__At an early hour this morning Mr. Anderson passed away, the neuralgic stroke having reached the heart. Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made, but it will probably be from the residence Friday at 2 p. m. Interment will be at Linwood cemetery.

__Cedar Rapids mourns the death of one of its most highly esteemed pioneers. this death was so sudden and unexpected that it came as a severe shock to the entire city. The loss is keenly realized by all Cedar Rapids people; it is regarded as personal by the pioneers with whom he was prominent in building up this city.
__Joseph S. Anderson was a man of high character, his sterling integrity being a marked trait. He was a conscientious, straightforward and loyal citizen.
__Having come here in 1853, Mr. Anderson has witnessed the growth of Cedar Rapids from a struggling settlement to a beautiful, prosperous city, and has been instrumental in a high degree to its advancement. He was prominent and active in every measure calculated to promote the interests of the city.
__Thus it is that Cedar Rapids sorrows over the death of this worthy and esteemed citizen.
__Joseph S. Anderson was born in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, August 10, 1834. His parents were James A. and Elizabeth Johnson Anderson. His father by occupation a wheelwright, died in 1845. His mother lived until 1867.
__In 1853, Mrs. Anderson¹ with her children came to Iowa and settled in Cedar Rapids. The journey from Pennsylvania was made by boat over the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to Muscatine, thence overland to Cedar Rapids.
__The family located in a log cabin on the farm of Thomas Gainor, a part of which is now the site of Linwood cemetery. The last resting place of Mr. Anderson will be within a few feet of the spot where the old log cabin stood in 1838.
__This land belonging to Mr. Gainor (sic-Gainer) in the early days was set apart by him for a family burying ground. The first interment made there was that of one of Mr. Gainor's (sic) children, a cousin of Mr. Anderson, in 1838.
__The cemetery was private until 1880, when the Linwood company was organized and incorporated. Mr. Anderson was prominent in the formation of the company and has been active in its affairs since.
__In his young manhood Mr. Anderson attended Cornell college at Mt. Vernon for two years.
__In 1860 he went to Colorado and was engaged in the stock business for two years, when he returned to Cedar Rapids and was connected with the army in a clerical capacity.
__At the close of the war he engaged in the grocery business, at one time being located in the old Angle block and later on First avenue in the building now occupied by Loftus Bros.
__The next two years Mr. Anderson taught school in the Madison building in Kingston and also served as secretary of that school district.
__When Kingston was incorporated into Cedar Rapids and the school districts united, Mr. Anderson was elected a member of the board of education, in which capacity he served for over twenty-two years.
__In 1873 he was elected justice of the peace and held that office for about twenty years. While serving in this capacity Mr. Anderson was admitted to the bar. His law practice has been confined largely to probate matter.
__When the bankruptcy law was passed he was appointed referee for Linn and Cedar counties. Mr. Anderson established in 1875 the insurance business in which he was engaged at the time of his death. The present firm of J. S. Anderson & Son was formed in 1885.
__Joseph S. Anderson and Miss Jennie Frazee were married in 1865. Mrs. Anderson is a daughter of Aaron Frazee, who came to Cedar Rapids in 1849. Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, three sons - Lew W., John B., and Joseph R.; a brother, James A., who resides at Dayton, Wash., and a sister, Mrs. Rose Cowell of Walla Walla, Wash.
__Mr. Anderson was a member of Cresent lodge, A. F. & A. M. Trowel chapter, R. A. M., Cedar Rapids lodge No. 251, B. P. O. E., Iowa Legion of Honor and National Union.
__While in Des Moines yesterday on business, Lew W. Anderson received a telegram that his father was critically ill. He hastened home and arrived a few moments before his father passed away.

__Late this afternoon The Gazette is requested to state that the funeral services for the Late Hon. J. S. Anderson, whose death occurred this morning from neuralgia of the heart, will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family residence on Second avenue west, and will be private. Friends wishing to view the remains are invited to call at the house Friday morning, from 10 to 12. Revs. Lockwood and Burkhalter will officiate at the funeral services, and the remains will be laid at rest in Linwood cemetery.

__The all-day meeting at St. Paul's M. E. church has been postponed from Friday, Feb. 10, to Feb. 17, on account of the death of an honored member of the church, Hon. J. S. Anderson.
