He was born in Powiersen, Germany, on July 4, 1914 to the late John and Emma (Hein) Ballman.
In 1923, he came to Detroit with his family where he completed the eighth grade and worked several jobs before making General Motors his career. From 1952 until he retired in 1975, he was a maintenance engineer at the Warren Tech Center.
In 1931, he married Marion Clara Peabody who preceded him in death on Sept. 1, 1983.
After his retirement, they lived near Port Austin during the summers and in New Port Richey, Fla. during the winters.
On Aug. 9, 1986, he married Leona (Fluegge) Peppel in Port Hope. They lived near Port Hope and in New Port Richey. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope, the Grindstone-Port Hope Sportsman's Club and the General Motors Retirement Club in Florida. He enjoyed golfing and keeping busy at the Port Hope farm homestead.
He was survived by his wife, Leona, of Port Hope; three children, Kurt W. Ballman and his wife, Marlene, of Big Rapids, Gary Ballman and his wife, Judi, of Denver and Karen Parent and her husband, Dennis, of Mt. Clemens; seven grandchildren, Steve and Debra Walsh, Kurt J. Ballman, Keith Ballman, Chris Ballman, John and Debbie Ballman, Todd and Cheryl Ballman and Alan and Donna Parent; seven great-grandchildren, Brian, Jason, Ryan, Sarah, Katherine, Katie and Sarah; two stepsons, Donald Peppel of Texas and Dale Peppel of Rochester; four step-grandchildren, Julie, Justin, Adam and Jason; three step-great-grandchildren, Kevin, Le'rin and Chrystine; one brother, Harry Ballman of Orange, Calif.; one sister, Ruth Erni of Seal Beach, Calif.; one brother-in-law, Eric Burton, of Newport Beach, Calif.; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and William Ballman; two sisters, Lydia Burton and Meta Hafler; and by a grandson, Scott Ballman.
