Velma was the daughter of Lucinda (Lucy) Bonds and George Monroe Baggett. She was married to Porter Downey and was the mother to Jimmy and Patricia Downey. Many years after Porter's death, she married again to a Mr. Espy. She was a sister to Hattie Baggett Willis, Mary Etta Baggett Johnson Messer, Arzena Baggett Bettes Cochran, Othar, Archie and Johnny Baggett. She was my aunt. I remember going to her house in Gadsden and she would be cooking and using a fresh coconut. Her daughter Patricia and I would eat the peelings off the coconut as Aunt Velma cut and grated it. I love coconut to this day. I don't remember what she was making. I was very young. This was in the early 50's.
