JOHN SMITH WILGUS, farmer; P.O. New Jerusalem; was born in Baltimore Hundred, Sussex Co., Delaware, Sept 9, 1818. His father was Samuel Wilgus, born July 20, 1782, and married a Daisy, who was the mother of John. The Wilgus (originally surnamed Wildgoose) family came originally from England; John's mother's mother was Delilah Wright; his father's mother was Leah Taylor. John was 17 when his parents came to this country and settled in the "woods". John was the eldest of a family of nine children; his father purchased 100 acres in this township - not a stick had been cut on the place. John remained with his father until 25 years of age. On Mar 27, 1843 he was married to Patience Haines, born in this township, and daughter of Joseph and Rachel Ballinger. She died on Feb 15, 1870. Sixteen children were born to them, several of whom are dead, namely: Caleb, Lydia, Edith, Martha, Margaret Wilda and Rachel J; those living are Narcissa Ann, now Mrs James Almon Brake, of Madison Co; Henry Asberry, in Union Co; Louisa Emeline, Mrs John Hughes, of this county; Lorenzo Dow (also known as Alonzo), in Union; Mary Etta, Mrs Thomas Godwin, of Madison Co; Hester Jane, Mrs John Lewis Farrington; Alice Rachel, Mrs Albert Davis, of Madison; David Warwick, John Borman and Charles Lamon, at home. Mr Wilgus' first purchase was 12 acres; he then added 44 and now has 100 acres. On Aug 30, 1872 he was married to Cynthia Bliss, whose mother's name was Miller, born in Indiana March 10, 1821. All of Mr Wilgus' family have been, and those living are, identified with the Methodist Church. Second wife Cynthia died on Mar 6, 1889. On Nov 12, 1889 John married third wife Louisa (Simpson) Breese, born Dec 31, 1832, who survived him and died on Mar 31, 1917.
