Mary was the daughter of Elisha and Ellen [Huff] Sharp. Her paternal grandfather was William Sharp, who was married 3 times and had a total of 22 children (according to the Sharp Family Tree). Her maternal grandparents were John and Mary [Carden] Huff, of Roanoke, Virginia.

Mary married Benjamin Franklin Locke, Sr. on November 18, 1840 in Meigs County, TN.

Mary and Benjamin had six children: Harriet Jane, Sarah Catherine, Victor M. (the founder of Antlers, OK), Susannah, Benjamin Franklin 'Frank', and Elisha.

When Mary's first husband Benjamin died in 1854, all of their children were still minors, the oldest being 15 years of age and the youngest, Elisha, born two months after Benjamin's death.

On March 30, 1865, Mary married William Foster in Meigs County, TN. By 1876 Mary was again a widow.

Mary then moved to the Choctaw Nation to be near her three sons. For a short time, she helped her son Frank, who had lost his wife Hattie in 1886, to raise his three children. Mary died at Goodland at the home of her son Frank on Jan 19, 1887.
