D.O. Baker, 82, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at the Hospice House.

He was born December 7, 1925, in Aquilla, Texas, to Dexter and Virgie Baker. D.O. grew up in a small town around the Dallas-Fort Worth area and in North Central Texas. He spent many happy hours with his brother and cousin, fishing and hunting on Denton Creek. He worked in cotton fields and as a cowboy to earn money as a teenager. Olen graduated from Ponder High School in Ponder, Texas. He joined the U.S. Army serving as a paratrooper with the 513th Parachute Regiment in World War II in Germany and France for 3 years. After honorable discharge, Olen started his career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 42 years, retiring in 1989. He married Della May Smelser on July 4, 1948, celebrating 60 years of marriage in 2008.

Olen continued to hunt, camp, and teach wilderness skills to his grandchildren until 2004. He was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers. Olen loved to fix things and tinker. He was a Toastmaster speaker, lay minister, and an active member of Highland United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and his cousin.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Della May Baker of Odessa; four children, Olen Dale Baker of Kermit, Wendy R. Baker of Odessa, Esther Baker Davis of Arlington and Jeanie Baker Kraemer of Odessa; seven grandchildren; his brother, Dale P. Baker of Odessa; his sister, Elsie Baker Strader of Justin, Texas; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Family visitation will be held at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, August 1, 2008, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 2, 2008, at Highland United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jimmy Braswell and Dot Donita officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens
