Wilbert (Bill) John Johnson, 89, Rush City, died on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000 at Lakeside Medical Center in Pine City.

Bill, as he was known to his friends and family, was born on Oct. 11, 1910 on the family farm near Greeley in Royalton Township, Pine County. He was the son of John A. and Hilda (Johnson) Johnson.

He grew up on the family farm and received his formal education at a nearby rural school.

Bill married Pearl Peterson on May 12, 1937, and they made their home on the farm. Pearl died in May of 1969. In May 1970, Bill married Esther Anderson.

The farm was sold in 1971, and Bill and Esther moved to Rush City. Bill worked in the Minneapolis area for Donovan Construction, retiring from there in 1977.

When the Rush City Livestock Sales Barn was in operation in Rush City, Bill and Esther operated a small restaurant there.

Bill always enjoyed any time he could spend with his family and was an avid cribbage player.

He is survived by his wife, Esther, son and daughter-in-law Doug and Vonnie Johnson, Warroad; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Miska, Pine City; grandchildren, Jackie and her husband, John Layton, Janette and her husband, Glenn Mosher, Jeff Johnson, John Miska and his wife, Sara, great grandchildren, Allyson and Parker Layton, Brianne, Ian and Sydney Mosher, Miranda and Kathryn Miska, sister and brother-in-law, Elvera and Stanley Swenson, Montana; other relatives and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl, parents, John and Hilda Johnson, nine brothers and sisters, and stepson, Virgil Miska.

Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 6 at the Olson Chapel in Rush City. The Rev. Laurie O'Shea officiated.

Honorary casketbearer was Sy Grote. Casketbearers were Jackie and John Leyton, Janette and Glenn Mosher, Jeff Johnson and John Miska.

Burial was at the Mission Covenant Cemetery near Rush City.
