When Philip James Strongman was born on March 11, 1875, in Prince, Prince Edward Island, Canada, his father, George Henry, was 46 and his mother, Hannah "Ann", was 39. He had three brothers and two sisters. He died on February 15, 1898, aboard the USS Maine in Havana Harbor, Havana, Ciego de Avila, Cuba, at the age of 22, and was buried in Prince Edward Island, Canada.
