Philip "James" Strongman was killed 15 Feb 1898, while aboard the US Battleship Maine in Havana, Cuba; age 22. His remains were lost during the explosion though he shares a marker headstone with his parents in Port Hill.

When Philip James Strongman was born on March 11, 1875, in Prince, Prince Edward Island, Canada, his father, George Henry, was 46 and his mother, Hannah "Ann", was 39. He had three brothers and two sisters. He died on February 15, 1898, aboard the USS Maine in Havana Harbor, Havana, Ciego de Avila, Cuba, at the age of 22, and was buried in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

On December 10, 1898 the United States signed a peace treaty with Spain in Paris, France, effectively ending the Spanish-American War. On April 19 a joint resolution of the two houses of Congress gave the authority to intervene on behalf of the Cubans. The treaty also called for the Spanish to ceded Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines for a payment of $20 million to be paid by the U.S. On the night of February 15 an underwater explosion while at anchor in Havana harbor destroyed the U.S.S. Maine and 266 officers and men were lost in the explosion.
