First Lieutenant William was a passenger of Second Lieutenant John Reginald Nickson on a Bristol Fighter C4830. William was invited for a joyride. The aircraft stalled in mid air and nosedived to the ground. The accident happened at Port Meadow just outside of Oxford England. William was twenty two years old. He is believed to have been the first Rochester man to die in service during World War I, although he was off duty at the time of his death. He was the son of renowned Civil War surgeon and tuberculosis expert Dr. William S. Ely
There is a memorial to him in the family plot at Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, Monroe County, New York, USA.
