Jacob was admitted to the National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Togus, Maine, on 24 February 1891, having received Pension Certificate number 6963. At the time he was described as age 54, 5' 8" tall, with light complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.

3 May 1861, he married Emily Ann Marshall.

On 5 Sep 1864 he enlisted in the U. S. Navy at Portland, Maine, and gave his hometown as Matinicus, ME. He served as an Ordinary Seaman on the U. S. S. Colorado, as well as on the Frigate Sabine and the Mary Sanford. He was discharged 21 June 1865, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the close of the war.

By 1870, Jacob was again living in Matinicus, ME, with his wife, Emily, and two children.

Later, he lived in Vinalhaven, ME, and was a fisherman by trade. He was a widower in 1891 and gave his next-of-kin as Daniel Glidden of Vinalhaven, Maine.
