John W (Gus) Carroll, the youger brother of Joseph Elias, was born and lived most of his adult life in SC before moving with his son, James J. and his family first to Illinois, then to Clark County, MO, finally settling in Pike County in 1851. He served in the War of 1812 and was married twice; both wives died in SC.
