Father Thomas Kennedy (1824-1864) was a coal miner who enlisted in November 1861 as a Private in Company B, 35th Indiana Infantry and was later promoted to Sergeant. He went missing in action and was taken as a confederate prisoner of war at the Battle of Chickamauga on 20 September 1863. He later died of starvation on 9 October 1864 while being held as a POW in a confederate field prison in Savannah, Georgia. Mother Mary Shaw Kennedy (1828-1891) re-married on 19 April 1868 to Thomas Douglass (1829-1880).
John Henry Kennedy (1847-1907) enlisted as a Private in Company I, 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery from October 1864 to October 1865. Re-enlisted in the 4th U.S. Cavalry and was stationed in Texas from 1866 to 1878.
Married 1st (abt 1868) to Mrs. Serina "Irene" Williams Montgomery (1847-1880) from Cherokee, San Saba County, Texas. She died of TB near Cherokee, Texas on 29 March 1880. Married 2nd to Malinda Elizabeth Wampler in Palo Pinto County, Texas on 13 April 1881.
Four daughters by his 1st wife Irene and one daughter by his 2nd wife Malinda.
