From the Dallas (TX) Morning News, March 8, 1992:

A memorial service for Samuel Pickles Lyles, an Irving-based scientist whose research pursuits ranged from grape growing to surviving nuclear holocaust, will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church in Irving. Dr. Lyles, 53, died of cancer Feb. 26 at his sister's home in Cheneyville, La., where he was interred. He was 53. While working for the United Nations as a soil scientist, he developed a waterproof adobe that could be used in underdeveloped countries. As a member of the Army Reserves, he helped the Defense Department study ways to survive nuclear attack. Dr. Lyles also taught physics at California State University in Fresno and worked with vintners on ways to make grapes less susceptible to weather and disease. Dr. Lyles was a Louisiana native and earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Louisiana State Univerity. He went on to earn a master's degree and a doctorate in theoretical physics from the University of Oklahoma. ***Survivors omitted for privacy.
