Zebediah Gates
We are called upon to chronicle, this week, the death of one of Groton's oldest and most substantial citizens - Zebediah Gates - and perhaps it will not be thought unfitting to write something about his family history. The only records of the family have seen declare that his grandfather, Zebediah Gates, died July 14th, 1783, aged 63. Sarah, his wife, died Jan. 16, 1798, aged 77.
Zebediah Gates, son of the above and father of the deceased, died April 7, 1816, aged 66. Abigail, his wife, died May 1, 1813, aged 58.
Zebediah Gates, the deceased, was born at the old homestead, about one mile north of Fort Hill, where his father and grandfather had lived and died before him, October 22, 1782, where he lived until a few years ago, when he was persuaded to come to Mystic River and take up his residence with his son. He has always been a prominent man in town affairs, has filled several town offices, and in 1848 was appointed Judge of Probate, which office he held until July 4, 1852, when age disqualified him for the office. He possessed great decision of character, kept himself well informed on all political and town affairs, and was often consulted by his townsmen in matters pertaining thereto. In April, 1803, he was married to Eunice Packer. They had six children, four of whom are now living. His wife died Feb. 3, 1820, aged 34 years. June 7, 1820, he married his second wife, Mary Denison, who is now living. They had four children, who are all living. He has been troubled for a number of years with a cancer near his eye, and was confined to the house by it for about 19 months previous to his death. He died on Friday, 15th inst., of quick consumption. His funeral took place last Sunday, at his late residence, and was attended by a large concourse of citizens. Rev. W. R. Long read a chapter from the Bible and offered a few appropriate remarks, and prayer was offered by Rev. A. C. Bronson, both of whom dispensed with their regular afternoon services for the occasion. His remains were taken to the Mystic River Cemetery.
