Martha Jane Crane was born to Joel and Jane Elizabeth (Davidson) Crane on Sept 14th, 1858 at Santa Rosa when it was just a "Township" in Sonoma County, California during the Gold Rush Era. Her parents were farmers, originally from Kentucky, who had arrived in California in 1850 with their respective families. Jane and Joel had 6 other children. Jane's sister, Martha's aunt, Susan Catherine Davidson, had married Joel's brother, Robert Crane. They had named one of their daughters Martha K. Crane and had a total of eleven children. Jane and Susan's parents, Jacob Ellis and Mary Bowles (Winn) Davidson, also lived in Santa Rosa with five of their siblings, per the 1870 Census. Martha never married. In 1880 she continued to live in the family home in Santa Rosa and taught school. In 1910, however, I found her, I believe, in Santa Ana, in Orange County, CA in 1910, working as a seamstress. By 1920, Martha had moved in with her brother, Alex, his wife, Gertrude, and their son, Ellis M. Crane, in San Diego, California. She was no longer working and was now 61 yrs. of age. Martha returned to Santa Rosa in Sonoma Co. in 1930, working as a housekeeper for Neva Hood, the homeowner on 5th St., and, finally, when the 1940 Census was taken on Apr 19th, 1940, Martha was living at 518 Ross St., Santa Rosa, with Vera Curtis, a widow, & her son, John Curtis. She was now 91 and there was no job listed for her. [I don't know if they were related or not.] Martha was most likely still living with Vera when she died on Nov 26th, 1945. She was buried at the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery with her parents, brothers, sisters and cousins. May she Rest Peacefully in Heaven.
