John Bower married to a Catherine who died in July 1859 at Decatur, Indiana leaving a 3 month old baby and then he married Sarah Herbison on October 4, 1868. They had 6 known children. Ellen Augusta born Aug. 1, 1869, Mary Elizabeth born Apr. 20, 1871, Sarah born Aug. 25, 1874, John Thompson born Nov. 12, 1882, Sadie Kaye born Apr. 27, 1885 and Harvey Edwin born Mar. 24, 1889. He served in the civil war as a 1st class fireman in the navy from November 28, 1864-August 5, 1865. He served on the USS Great Western, Essex and Red Rover. He claimed his pension in Maiden Rock, Wisconsin. Address listed at death as 802 N. Hight St. Lake City, Wisconson. He suffered from the war of rheumatism and dislocation of the left wrist. He was described as being 5ft 9 inches tall, weight 160 lbs at age 56 years.

Death Certificate states that he was a retired farmer, birthplace Germany, father's name Jacob mother's name unknown both born in Germany. Informant H.E. Bower. Cause of death Chronic Myocanditis. Contributed by senility. Place of burial Maiden Rock, Wisconsin on December 26, 1915.
