George Samuel Hughes, son of Joseph Hughes and Sarah Hale, died March 13, 1933 from apoplexy, and illness of 13 days.

George Samuel Hughes was survived by his wife Mary Edith Roberts Hughes. George was a farmer.

George and Mary Edith were married in January 15, 1897 and had the following children:

Lettie Bell Hughes, (July 1898) who died young; Anna Lee Hughes Jackson (Ralph); Susie Florence Hughes Douthitt (Robert); Kenneth Samuel Hughes; Edith Mae Hughes Morris (Russell); and Roy Robinson Hughes.

George Samuel first married Harriet Stevenson on January 28, 1869 in Owen County. George and Harriet had the following children; Mary Ellen Hughes (abt 1869) who was the second wife of Albert Jasper Works and the mother of Effie Works Ireland (Hendrix, son of George's sister, Mary Frances 'Frankie' Hughes Ireland), Sarah Alice Hughes (abt 1872), and Rebecca A. Hughes (abt 1874).

George Samuel next married Ms. P Morgan Hughes August 8, 1882 in Owen County. (There is also a marriage listed to a 'Mrs' Hughes in 1883?). George and (presumably) P. Hughes had two children; Bill P. Hughes (Jan 1884) and George Hughes (Jan 1886).

It is possible George had two additional children from an earlier marriage; Ella Hughes (1867) and Nannie Hughes (1860).

George Samuel Hughes had the following siblings: John William Hughes; Katherine 'Katie' Hughes Davis (J. C. B.); Rebecca Ann Hughes Works (*See Note below) (Jefferson Davis); Cynthia 'Cynthie' T. Hughes Morgan (Ben) Fogle (Jasper); Nancy Ellen 'Nannie' Hughes Works (James Crawford); Silas P. Hughes; Augustus 'Gus' Hughes, Mary Frances 'Frankie' Hughes Ireland (Asa William); and Granville Hughes.

Mr. George Hughes was my g-g uncle.

*Note: Rebecca Ann Hughes' parents were listed both on her death certificate and in her obituary as Joseph and Sarah Hale Hughes, thus making her the sister of George S. Hughes.

There was a child Rebecca A. Hughes listed on the 1880 census as the daughter George Samuel Hughes (son of Joseph and Sarah Hale Hughes) and Harriet Stevenson. Also listed as daughters of the couple were Sarah Alice Hughes and Mary Ellen Hughes.

There was also a child named Rebecca Hughes listed on the 1880 census as the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Hughes. Also on the 1880 Census both Mary E. Hughes and Sarah A. Hughes were listed as living with Joseph and Sarah Hughes and listed as granddaughters.

There is a possibility that Rebecca was actually the daughter of George and Harriet and the designation on the 1880 census should have been 'granddaughter' of Joseph and Sarah. The ages of the two Rebecca were given as the same. No other records for a Rebecca Hughes in the county with that birth year have been found to indicate that there were two Rebecca Hughes born in 1875.

In any event, 'Rebecca' was listed on my great aunt Hallie's genealogical notes as her Aunt and as having married Jeff Works and was listed along with her Hallie's other aunts and uncles, including George. Since everything 'written' I have seen indicates that Rebecca Ann is George Samuel Hughes sister and not his daughter, I have followed that conjecture in filling out the 'family-tree'.
