ROCKY MOUNT, VA — Mr. Ashley Alfred Jones, Jr., 56, of 191 Fralins Road, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2008, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
The graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 28, at Ridge-View Memorial Gardens in Eden, N.C.
Mr. Jones was born on September 4, 1951, in Wilson, N.C., the son of Ashley Alfred and Beatrice Powell Jones, Sr., both deceased. He graduated from Morehead High School where he had excelled in track, setting the state record for pole vaulting. In his earlier years, he was a welder for nuclear power plants. He was a private pilot with his instrument rating for over 30 years and had built his own aircraft. He was an entrepreneur and a real estate investor in North Carolina and Virginia.
He is survived by his daughters, Dr. Heather Kathryn Smith and husband, Dr. Chad Edward Smith, of Goldsboro, Miss Kristen Diane Jones of Madison; his sisters, Mrs. Terrie Bruyere and husband, John, of Houston, Texas, Mrs. Becky Minichello and husband, Ron, of Eden and Ms. Jinger Silvers of Ridgeway, Va.; his grandchild, Nora K. Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ashley will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Following the graveside service, the family and friends will gather at Shiloh Airport in Stoneville to celebrate his life. Food and drinks will be provided.
