This family was the fifth to settle in Tioga, Texas. They settled on the Lights Ranch near Pilot Point in 1881, farmed for two years and moved to Tioga to open a hotel. The hotel was known as the "Hackberry Hotel", named for the large number of those trees around the area, and later as the Tioga Hotel. They also owned a hot house and floral business near the hotel around the turn of the century
