Funeral services will be held Tuesday for E.W. Godbey, dean of the local bar and president of the Morgan County Bar Association, who passed away Sunday shortly after noon at the Madison College sanatorium in Tennessee.
Mr. Godbey, one of North Alabama's best known residents, went to the sanatorium some days ago in an effort to regain his health following an illness here.
A native of Morristown, Tenn, Mr. Godbey had practiced law here more than 50 years and his was regarded as one of the most brilliant legal minds in the state.
Mr.Godbey was born on March 2, 1861, the son of Crockett and Evelyn Godbey. He was educated at Hiawassi college and the University of Alabama where he graduated in 1885. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity.
In 1888 he married Lucile Blakemore, of Memphis, who preceded him to the grave some years ago.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Mrs. Ralph Cowart of Tuscaloosa and a brother, Rev. Charles C. Godbey, pastor of the North Fortieth Street Methodist Church in Birmingham.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Central Methodist Church, in which the deceased long had been active, being a trustee at the time of his death. The services will be conducted by the pastor Rev. R.L. Archibald, and interment will be made in city cemetery, McAfee, Howell and Young directing.
The family requested no flowers. The following will be active pallbearers: W.M. Voorhies, Will Wyker, Julian Harris, Atlee Hoff, Paul Eubanks, Judge T.C. Almon, Joe Snead and Luke Pryor.
