William Henry Poole was born 1879 in Johnston County, son of George "Ransom" Poole (died 1921) and Lucy Jane Johnson. It is known he lived in Clayton, Johnston County, and worked as a bookkeeper with J.C. Barbour & Sons, later moving to Wendell in Wake County where he was well known in the business community.

On September 28, 1905, 26-year old Henry married 28-year old Ella Hinton, daughter of the late Joseph Thomas Hinton and his wife, Elizabeth "Bettie" Wall. The marriage lasted only 3 years, as Ella died of unknown causes at her mother's home on November 13, 1908. She was only 31 years old.

Less than 3 years later, on June 9, 1911, the 32-year old widower quietly married 32-year old Genora Wall of Clayton in a ceremony at the Baptist church attended by a small group of friends and relatives. Following the wedding, the couple returned to Wendell to reside. Genora was the daughter of John Hopkins Wall & Lucy Ann Hinton, and was first cousin to Henry's first wife, Ella Hinton.

Henry Poole died in Smithfield in 1954 at age 75. The gravestone bears his name and the names of both his wives, but there is no date of death for Genora Wall Poole (1876-1966); however, Genora died February 11, 1966 and is buried here.
