Christiana "Chrissy" Avera was born about 1815 in the Clayton area of Johnston County, NC, the youngest of 6 known surviving children (2 boys/4 girls) born to farmers Thomas Avera III and his (2nd) wife, Judith Smith.

She was the paternal grandchild of Thomas Avera II and wife, Mary, of Johnston Co; and gr-grandchild of Thomas Avera I and Judith Bettis who came to Johnston County from Surry Co, VA ca. 1730's. She was the maternal grandchild of Benjamin Smith of Franklin County, who came to Johnston County in the 1770's.

The Avera family is quite prominent in Johnston & Cumberland Counties, and the family name is often spelled differently even among members of the same family. It is most often found as Avera, Avery or Averyt.

In 1831, the 16-year old married 24-year old John F. Ellington a wealthy planter and Baptist minister in Clayton, who is reported to have served as Confederate chaplain during the Civil War.

The couple would have 6 known children (3 boys/3 girls): Cornelia Adaline(c. 1831-1888), Martha (1837-1885), John T (c. 1839), Jesse T. (1842-1910), Joseph C. (1843-1905), and Julia A. (1845-1912).

Chrissy was widowed in 1890 when her husband of 59 years passed at about age 83. Chrissy survived another 2 years, passing in 1892 at age 77. They are buried in Clayton City Cemetery amongst other family members.
