Paul I. Brandenburg, age 96, of Mattoon, passed away at 12:32 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2003 at the Odd Fellow Rebekah Home in Mattoon.

Funeral services will be held at Noon Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Diener and Gene Creek officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston. Visitation will be one hour prior to services.

Paul was born October 7, 1906 in Rural Westfield, Illinois, a son of Dick and Carrie Goodman Brandenburg. He married Ruth E. Conley November 4, 1939 at Rockville, Indiana, she preceded him in death March 29, 1988. He is survived by a brother, Jack Brandenburg and wife Wilma of Wichita, Kansas and several nieces and nephews. His parents, two sisters and three brothers preceded him in death.

Paul was a graduate of Blackwell Oklahoma High School. He was employed by Brown Shoe Company in Charleston for 17 years and was an engineer for the New York Central and Penn Central Railroads for 26 years. Paul was an avid supporter of the Lakeland Basketball and baseball teams for over 20 years. He was a contributor and benefactor of the Sarah Bush Lincoln Foundation. He donated an organ his wife Ruth used to play to the foundation in her memory.

During his active years, Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Paul was a 50 year member of the Charleston Lodge #35, A.F. & A.M. and was a 32nd degree member of the Lodge, Council, Consistory Valley of Southern Illinois at Belleville.

Summing up his life after his 96th birthday, Paul stated he had a good life and was blessed with special friends Berl and Bytha Holsapple, Dick, Nora and Karen Redfern, Gene Creek, Rev. Joe Diener and his sister-in-law, Mary Pauley.
