C. Elwood "Woody" Charles, 90, of Lancaster, died on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Masonic Village in Elizabethtown.

Born November 12, 1917, in East Hempfield Township, he was the son of the late J. Milton and Sabina (Harnish) Charles. He was married to A. Lavana (Locklin) Charles on October 30, 1943.

A U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, Woody served with the 652nd Engineering Unit under General Patton. He served in five campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes. Mr. Charles received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Service Medal.

Woody had a special interest in cars. Prior to his military service, he was employed for four years at Wiggins Chevrolet in Lancaster. Following WWII, he returned to Lancaster, to work at the former Garden Spot Motors where he was a parts representative from 1946 to 1974. In 1959, Woody started Charles' Laundry on East Orange Street, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Mountville, the American Legion Post #34, Tall Cedars Lodge #27, Zembo Shrine, and the Harrisburg Consistory. A 32nd degree Mason with the Charles M. Howell Lodge #496, Woody was a member for over 50 years.

His interests were golfing, working in his yard, wintering in Sarasota, Florida and spending time with his granddaughters, to whom he was affectionately known as "Pappaw."

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, E. Gregory Charles, husband of June (Canter) Charles; two granddaughters, Ashley and Alison Charles; a sister, Mildred Brackbill, all of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by a sister, Naomi Good, and two brothers, Roy H. and Warren H. Charles.

Funeral Services will be held at the Andrew T. Scheid Funeral Home, 320 Blue Rock Road, Millersville, PA, 717-872-2266 on Monday, July 28, 2008 at 2 PM with Rev. Eloise M. Shanley officiating. Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park, Lancaster, with Military Rites accorded by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may visit with the family at Scheid's on Monday, between 1 and 2 PM. Please omit flowers.
