Abner was the son of Harvey H. Gragg and Melinda McClurd Gragg. His maternal grandfather was Rev. Isaac McClurd, a prominent Baptist minister in Watauga County, North Carolina.
Abner Gragg married Narcissa Hicks on April 5, 1875 in Sevier County, Tennessee.

Per his death certificate, he died on November 18, 1939 in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky. He was 83, widowed and his place of residence was Bell County, Kentucky. His occupation was listed as Minister. Per his obituary, he was a retired Methodist minister.
Per his obituary (copy posted), published in the Middlesboro Daily News, Middlesboro, Kentucky on November 21, 1939, Abner was buried at Odd Fellows Cemetery. However, per a cemetery census of Pineville Cemetery by C. Richard Matthews, Abner is buried in the Pineville Cemetery.
