Herman Bell, Signalman, Avoids a Freight Train and Killed by Engine.
Failing to hear the warning cries of fellow workmen, Herman Bliss Bell, a signalman employed by the Pennsylvania railroad was instantly killed in the Pennsylvania railroad yard at Seventeenth street at 2:20 o'clock this morning by an engine backing out of the roundhouse yard. He had been oiling switches when a freight came along. Avoiding the freight he stepped back in front of the engine, was run over and cut to pieces. Conductor Snyder saw his danger and twice called to him, the noise of the passing train doubtless drowning the sound.
Bell had been employed by the Pennsylvania railroad three years. Previously he worked at Riling Bros.' dairy at Eldorado, where he lived. He was an experienced dairy hand, having worked for five years with Simon Shoemaker, near Hollidaysburg.
The remains were taken to Lafferty & John's morgue, where Coroner Blackburn viewed them this morning. Mr. Blackburn will not decide whether or not he will hold an inquest until after he interviews Snyder, who witnessed the accident.

He was wedded to Clara Riling, daughter of Levi Riling, April 21, six years ago. His wife and one daughter, Lucy, and his parents survive. Also two brothers and two sisters, Isaac at home, Mrs. Edith Davis of Gaysport, Mrs. Kenneth Black of Eldorado and Ira Vance Bell of Lexington, Ky.
Deceased was a member of the First Lutheran church, the Knights of Malta, the Signalmen's association and the Relief.
The funeral will take place on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, services to be conducted at the home of D.A. Yon, 1415 Eighteenth street, by Rev. O.C. Roth, his pastor. Burial in Carson Valley cemetery.
