Luella Ahlswede Hill, the daughter of Arthur and Bertha Keller Ahlswede, was born and raised in Door County, Wisconsin. She lived for a time in Chicago, then moved to South Haven, Michigan, where she married Milt Hill. They had five children.
Luella was everything a mother should be. She doted on all her children, always encouraging their ambitions and talents, and there was nothing she would not sacrifice for or give to any of them. Her favorite pastime at the end of the day was expert-level crossword puzzles, and she had the vocabulary to prove it.
What I got from the short time I had with my mother was a love of learning, a liberal and open-minded outlook, and unconditional support and love.
