MCGINNIS, NOBLE L. (1829–1898). Noble L. McGinnis, farmer and Confederate officer, was born in Madisonville, Monroe County, Tennessee, on August 3, 1829. He was the son of Christopher Hamilton and Malinda (Moore) McGinnis. In 1846 McGinnis moved with his family to Mississippi. In 1851 he settled with his family in Bastrop County, Texas, and worked as a farmer. On April 27, 1858, McGinnis married Sarah Keziah Pankey in Burleson, Texas. This couple had one son and two daughters.
When the Civil War began, McGinnis raised and was captain of an infantry unit which became Company H of the Second Texas Infantry Regiment. The Second saw action at the battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Iuka, and Farmington, and McGinnis received a promotion to major following Corinth. The unit also took part at the siege of Vicksburg, where McGinnis was taken prisoner. Following his parole, McGinnis traveled to Houston where the Second Infantry was reorganized, and he returned to service and eventually received promotions to lieutenant colonel and colonel.
After the end of the war, McGinnis returned to Texas briefly and resumed work as a farmer. In 1869 he moved to Alexandria, Rapides Parish, Louisiana, where he established himself as a stock raiser, mail contractor, and dry goods merchant. McGinnis became one of the leading citizens of Alexandria and served on the local school board, as mayor, and as a leader in the Methodist church. He also belonged to Lodge 84 of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Alexandria and was deputy grand master of the Texas Order of the Odd Fellows. On December 10, 1872, McGinnis married Manora Valsece McKinney. This couple had two sons and one daughter. McGinnis died at Eden Plantation in Bayou Rapids, Rapides Parish, Louisiana, on June 14, 1898.
