Named after his paternal grandfather, Leander Columbus Burkhart (1823-1875), an Oregon Pioneer of 1847, Leander Kenneth Burkhart was born on Sep 15, 1882 in Albany, Linn County, Oregon to one of Leander and Melissa Ann (Davidson) Burkhart's son's, Hezekiah Davidson Burkhart (1853-1924) and his wife, Emily Mary Geisendorfer (1860-1899). Young Leander Kenneth was born at the family's home on their portion of the old donation land claim that had been passed down from Leander to his children upon his death. When Leander Kenneth came of age, he not only helped care for the family's farm but was also given more responsibilities as he grew older. He farmed the land that had been in our family all of his life, marrying Ruth Bodine, a daughter of Pioneers, and living on the donation land claim just outside of town. At one time, he even produced documents that verified that the land was, indeed, his by inheritance. Ruth had suffered from Rheumatic Fever as a child, so her heart was not very strong. She passed away on December 7th, 1958 and was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Linn County, Oregon where so many of her family members and his as well were interred. Leander passed away just over four years later, on January 31st, 1963 and was buried next to his beloved wife at Riverside Cemetery. They are together forever, in Paradise. May they both Rest in Peace.
