James A. Brown was born 1826 in Morgan Co., Tennessee to Mary Ann (Phillips) and Thomas Brown. This is the James BROWN from Allardt in Fentress Co., TN who served the Union in the Civil War. (Pvt. Co. K, 9th TN Cavalry - USA). He appeared as James Brown on the 1890 Veteran's and Widow's Census for Union Soldiers. He reported suffering a "ruptured abdomen" while in service on 5 July 1865. He died in 1895 and is buried in the William BLAIR Cemetery in the Northwest Section of the Burrville Quadrangle east of the Allardt Community on the Crooked Creek Road. The marker reads only "James A. BROWN, Co. K, 9th TN Cavalry". His brother, Rev. William Pemberton "W. P." Brown, is buried near him. James A. Brown married Sarah "Sallie" Anderson, daughter of Sarah Nobles and Lewis Anderson, about 1845. They were the parents of eleven children.
