This is Levi (Leavins) Hays and his wife, Mary Leavins. Levi was born a Leavins and was later adopted by James Leonard "Len" Hays/Hayes. Levi married his cousin Mary Leavins. "Len" was born a Hays. He was illiterate and when he signed up for the military, the recruiter spelled his name Hayes, instead of Hays. When a family member told him it was spelled Hayes, he just continued using the Hayes name the rest of his life. Half of his children went to court and had their name changed from Hays to Hayes. The other half refused to do so, including Levi Hays.
