DEATH AT COLUMBUS
Chas. W. Hopwood, Formerly Of This City, Succombs To Stroke Of Apoplexy After Brief Illness
BURIAL TO BE WALNUT RIDGE
Charles W. Hopwood, a native of this county and former resident of Jeffersonville for many years, died at 8:35 Friday night at his home at Columbus, Ind, where he moved about ten years ago. Death was due to a stroke of apoplexy which he sustained about four weeks ago while at work. At no time since then had his recovery seemed probable and his relative and friends were prepared to hear the news of his passing away.
Mr. Hopwood was 56 years of age. He was born September 12, 1854, at New Market, his parents being Willis Hopwood and Martha (Davis) Hopwood. One of his half brothers, John Leach of this city, was born on the same day of the month, just 14 years later. His father died when he was quite young and his mother subsequently remarried John J. Leach who died November 27, 1909. The mother survives her son and is residing near Charlestown.
Rather more than 30 years ago Mr. Hopwood was married to miss Emma Totten, daughter of J. M. Totten, of this city, who survives him with one daughter, Miss Alice Hopwood, who is well known here having spent much of her time in Jeffersonville since her parents moved to Columbus, making her home part of her time with her aunt, Mrs. Lillie Armstrong. Besides his mother, wife and daughter, Mr. Hopwood leaves several other relatives: one brother---Willis Hopwood, of New Market; four half brothers---Henry and John Leach, of Jeffersonville; Isaac Leach, of Charlestown, and James Leach of Lawton, Okla; one half sister---Mrs. William Lyons, of New Albany; one step-brother---Albert Leach, of Indianapolis.
Mr. Hopwood was for many years employed as a steward on the river and the greater part of his life his home was in this city. Since locating at Columbus about ten years ago he had been connected with the Reeves Manufacturing Company. He was a member of the Presbyterian church of that city and of Hope lodge, No. 13, Knights of Pythians, of Jeffersonville.
Mrs. Alice Hopwood was at the home of her father when the end came and Mrs. Armstrong went up this morning. Funeral services will be held this afternoon from the Presbyterian church at Columbus and the body will then be taken to the home of the father-in-law, J. M. Totten, at 913 East Chestnut street. Interment will be at Walnut Ridge cemetery.
The body of Mr. Hopwood will arrive at 6 Sunday evening and the funeral, which be be private, will be held at 2:30 Monday afternoon.

PYTHIAN KNIGHTS ACCOMPANY BODY
Columbus, Ind., May 6. --- (Special.) --- Charles Hopwood, aged 56 years, died at his home to-day. The body was sent this afternoon to Jeffersonville his former home, for burial. It was accompanied by a delegation from the local lodge of Knights of Pythias, of which he was a member.
