Betty Ann Froehlich Adams, 76, passed away at home Wednesday, July 11, 2007, following a chronic illness.
Funeral: 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at Ridglea Presbyterian Church, Fort Worth. Private entombment: Greenwood Mausoleum. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Funeral Home.
Mrs. Adams was a mother, homemaker, gourmet cook, artist, educator, docent at the Kimbell Art Museum and longtime member of the executive committee of the board for the Fort Worth Ballet. Her late husband, William L. "Bill" Adams, was the former chairman of Union Pacific Resources and a dedicated philanthropist and volunteer.
Born in Dallas to Arthur and Dorothy Froehlich, Betty grew up in Los Angeles, Calif., with her sister, Jean. She attended Fairfax High School, graduating in 1949. She attended college first at SMU in Dallas and was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. She completed her college work at UCLA, where she obtained a bachelor of science degree in home economics education. She had a lifelong commitment to higher education, which culminated in the first endowed chair in the education department at Texas Christian University, the William L. and Betty F. Adams Chair of Education.
She met her husband, a Navy officer, on a blind date set up by her close friend, Janet Eddy. Following marriage in 1954, her growing family moved 14 times as her husband was transferred around the Midwest while working as a geologist and senior executive for Amoco. They settled in Fort Worth in 1981, when Bill joined Champlin Petroleum/Union Pacific Resources. Through all of the moves, Betty maintained an optimistic attitude and developed lasting friendships with neighbors, many of whom she remained in contact with for the rest of her life. A variety of her childhood experiences and other recollections were compiled in her book, "Adams Rib."
During college Betty developed a passion for art, which she pursued for the rest of her life. She produced remarkable original art, which she signed "BAFA" and refused to sell. Mrs. Adams' art adorned her home, the offices of her husband, her brothers-in-law, her children's homes and homes of special friends and extended family. In addition to the arts, her probing intellect led her to absorb the classics of English literature and classical music to a depth and manner that was truly unique for someone who did not study these subjects professionally. A world traveler, Betty visited more than 50 countries, including all seven continents.
The great achievement of her life was and remains the dedication and love she lavished upon her family. Her four sons, and later her 14 surviving grandchildren, were the central focus of Betty's life. Her children never wanted for a Cub Scout den mother and rarely found themselves without some creative or educational project to challenge their minds and inspire curiosity.
Despite the terrible burden of Parkinson's disease, scoliosis and arthritis she suffered during the last 15 years of her life, Mrs. Adams steadfastly maintained an optimistic outlook, cheerful attitude, quick wit, probing mind and insightful sense of humor. All who knew her well will sorely miss her sharp tongue, irony and unexpected pithy verbal jabs.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, William L. "Bill" Adams, and a granddaughter, Julia.
The family expresses its sincere thanks to Betty's longtime care giver, Mrs. Teresa Luna, Teresa Gonzales, Beatrice Hernandez, Ana Martinez and other loving caregivers who enabled Betty to remain in her beloved home during her illness.
Survivors: She leaves her sons, Glenn and wife, Melinda, Craig and wife, Patty, Drew and wife, Corinne, and Kenneth and wife, Cristina; grandchildren, Will, Greg, Lauren, Anna, Jacqueline, Andrew, Douglas, Nicholas, Connor, Alexander, Carissa, Katrina, Angelica and Derrick; and her sister, Jean Ganeles.
