Anchorage resident Arthur J. Dufour, 79, died May 11, 2008, as a result of surgery complications at Elmendorf hospital. A visitation was at Evergreen Memorial Chapel downtown, with a service. Burial was at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery.

Art was born Jan. 13, 1929, in Presque Isle, Maine, to Florence and Addess Dufour. He began his lifelong adventure and left Maine in the mid-1940s after joining the merchant marine. In 1948, he joined the Army Air Force, which initially brought him to Alaska on a troop ship to Whittier. During this time at Fort Richardson, he met and later married the love of his life, Delores Davis. In 1949, when Art was medically discharged from the service, he and Delores "Ducy" moved to Idaho. Art and Ducy had three of their four children while living in Wallace, Idaho. There, he worked as an underground miner, and in 1953 moved to San Manuel, Ariz., to work the underground copper mines. Art became ill after nine years in the mining field and could no longer return to work. In 1957, while living in Arizona, Art and Ducy had their fourth child. Art had always dreamed of returning to Alaska. In 1969, the couple came north for a vacation and never left. "A true Alaskan man who has done it all," his family wrote, he found work in the gas fields on the Kenai Peninsula, as a glazier for Anchorage Glass, and for the Municipality of Anchorage as an equipment operator and later as a heavy equipment mechanic. He retired in the early 1980s from ACS Motorpool. After his retirement, Art spent time finishing the house he built on Upper DeArmoun Road. He enjoyed mushing dogs, hunting, fishing, flying and making knives. He continued to make knives for many years until it was discovered that Ducy had breast cancer. His entire life was then dedicated to caring for her until her death in 2006. It was during this round-the-clock care for Ducy that his own health began to fail. In 2007, he was hospitalized with an infection from a kidney that stopped working. He chose to have it removed in April 2008 in hopes that he would once again feel well. He was looking forward to spending time with two of his brothers who were coming up this summer to fish, prospect and sightsee. His family wrote: "Art was always a loving and caring family man. He worked hard all his life to provide the best for them. He was always the 'rock' of the family and the foundation that supported his loved ones, a trait he has passed on to generations to follow. He was a strong and devoted man and will be dearly missed." He was preceded in death by his wife, Ducy Dufour; sons, William and Terry Dufour; brother, Donald Dufour; and father, Addess Dufour.

He is survived by his mother, Florence Dufour; sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Harry Manus; brothers and sister-in-law, Richard, Roy, David and Jeanette, Robert and T.C. Dufour; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Mike Crow; son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Candy Dufour; grandchildren, Brianna and Ryan Crow, Brett and Laura Dufour, and Adam and Tiffany Dufour; and great-grandchildren, Kinsey and Lindsay Dufour, and Justin and Nick Dufour. Arrangements were with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel. Visit the online memorial at legacy.com
