Although he was a private person, Harold Last was never shy about stepping forward to serve his country or community.
A World War II veteran, Mr. Last joined the Port Washington
Fire Department after returning home from the service. He spent the next 40 years as a volunteer firefighter, retiring in 1986 as chief engineer.
Mr. Last was also a filtration plant operator for the City of Port Washington Water Department from 1972 until retiring in February 1988.
"He was very good at mechanical things, at fixing things up," said his wife Betty Last.
"Everybody knew him as Mr. Fix - It. I would tell him I couldn't break enough things to keep him busy."
Mr. Last , of 501 N. Holden St. Port Washington, died of prostate cancer Wednesday, Nov. 19, at St. Mary's Hospice in Milwaukee. He was 83.
He was born Nov. 19, 1920, in Port Washington to William and Johanna Schmitz Last.

On May 29, 1948, he married Betty Ann Hoppe at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Port Washington.
Before he worked for the water utility, Mr. Last operated heavy equipment for Muehlberg Gravel and Schmitz Ready Mix, both of Port Washington.
Mrs. Last said her husband was a quiet person who liked spending time with his family. He also enjoyed woodworking and yard work.
Mr. Last was a member of St. Mary's Church and the Van Ells - Schanen American Legion Post, both of Port Washington.
He is survived by his wife, four children, 18 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
